REVIEW AT TIMBA.COM
Excerpt from review:
“Animals of Cuban Music” is Jen Paz’ second documentary about the state of the contemporary dance music scene in Cuba. Her first film “¡Popular!” followed La Charanga Habanera during what might be called the end of their pure timba period, when they were hugely popular on the Island following the release of the CD “Soy cubano, soy popular”. As indicated by the subtitle: “salsa vs reggaeton”, “Animals” presents the situation in Havana after the reggaeton explosion that had been building in Cuba for years, but was slowed by policies that discouraged reggaeton.

I just loved the DVD ! I bought it and received it recently and you made my day! The documentary is filled wit the real sound of La Habana… I was brought back to my Farandulero’s atmosphere … Great soundtrack all along and the topics addressed by all musicians really reflect what is in the air … the true question of identity in Cuban Music.. is Reggeaton a threat ?
I have only one word : BRAVO ! Well thought, Well done ! Right to the point … All in there in very sound, accurate and well positioned…

It’s widescreen DVD [16:9] audio 48 k. The editing is really great and the quality is at the at the level of television shows like MTV. The film is an excellent documentary about the current situation of Cuban music and some of its protagonists. In particular, it emphasizes the differences and similarities with salseros/timberos and the new generation of musicians, who while inspired by reggaeton, have introduced into their own productions unmistakable elements of Cuban dance music. I enjoyed it and it made me want to return to Cuba!
Me gustó y me hizo querer volver a Cuba!
ITALIANI:

I wonder when tania will form his own band, she has too much potencial. Thanks to Jennifer for opening my eyes to Cuban Reggaeton!

I just finished watching Jennifer Paz’ new film, “Animals of Cuban Music”, on Monday. It’s a really well done doc. It’s as good as her previous film, “Popular”.
The subject is different this time. In Popular she chronicled the adventures of La Charanga Habanera as one of the top bands in Cuba. This time she explores the Cuban music scene as it exists today; a combination of timba and reggaeton. She touches on the struggles that each genre is experiencing; each has unique struggles as well as some combined ones.
As I started watching it I thought that it might get kind of negative after one major timba artists voiced his dislike for reggaeton noting, in his opinion, that it “only has two beats”. Not being a real reggaeton fan I kind of thought that was funny and even laughed out loud. I don’t want to give it away, but the film wasn’t negative at all. You should check it out to see what else is said.
The film was tastefully done with a fairly balanced mix of long, live performance clips from both genres. I thought the graphic touches that she used were really nice as well. You can see the effort that was put into the project in the quality of the overall work. I think you will enjoy the film even if you don’t like reggaeton, and you really will enjoy it if you do.
